Dog Food: What to Consider When Choosing

Dog Food: What to Consider When Choosing

Faced with dozens of dog food options on the market, many owners choose by a familiar brand name or a salesperson's recommendation. That approach can leave your dog with a food that doesn't agree with them: picky eating, soft stools, hair loss or fast weight gain. Choosing dog food gets much easier once you understand three things: what life stage your dog is in, what the ingredient list tells you, and how to switch foods safely.

This guide walks you through your dog's nutritional needs, how to choose by age and how to read an ingredient label. It also introduces an organic kibble for dogs of all life stages for you to consider.

What Nutrients Do Dogs Need Every Day?

A complete meal for dogs needs to supply all of these nutrient groups:

    1. Protein: helps build muscle, skin and coat, and supports the immune system. According to AAFCO (the Association of American Feed Control Officials, which sets nutritional standards for pet food in the U.S.), adult dog food needs a minimum of about 18% protein and puppy food about 22.5% (on a dry matter basis).
    2. Fat and omega-3/6 fatty acids: a concentrated energy source that keeps skin healthy and coats shiny. DHA and EPA from fish and fish oil also support eyes, heart health and memory.
    3. Fiber: supports digestion, helps form firm stools and reduces stool odor.
    4. Vitamins and minerals: calcium and phosphorus for bones and teeth; vitamins C and E to support the immune system.
    5. Clean water: should always be available, especially when your dog eats dry kibble.

That said, each dog's exact nutritional needs depend on breed, weight, activity level and health, so the figures above are for reference only.

How to Choose Dog Food by Age

Puppies, adult dogs and senior dogs have different nutritional needs. This table gives you a quick overview:

    Life stage

    Characteristics

    What to look for

    Puppy (under about 12 months)

Grows fast; needs a diet rich in energy and protein

Choose a puppy or all-life-stages formula; split into 3–4 small meals a day

    Adult dog

    Stable needs

Balance protein and energy to maintain weight; usually fed 2 meals a day

    Senior dog

Less active, gains weight easily, joints weaken over time

A diet high in fiber and antioxidants; add joint-supporting nutrients such as calcium and glucosamine

Age ranges are a rough guide. Large-breed dogs usually mature more slowly than small breeds, so if you're unsure, ask your veterinarian.

All Life Stages Dog Food: When Should You Use It?

All life stages dog food is a formula designed to meet the needs of both puppies and adult dogs. It is especially convenient for households with several dogs of different ages: one kibble works for the whole pack, and you don't have to switch foods as your puppy grows up.

Still, think twice in a few cases:

    1. Large-breed puppies, or dogs that are pregnant or nursing: ask your veterinarian about the right portions.
    2. Dogs with kidney, liver or digestive conditions, or on a therapeutic diet: follow your vet's instructions.
    3. Dogs with a past allergy to a protein: avoid that protein and choose a different flavor.

6 Things to Check When Reading a Dog Food Label

Food packaging holds a lot of useful information. Check these six points:

    1. A clearly named protein source: the label should name the specific meat or fish (beef, lamb, duck, salmon, etc.) rather than use vague descriptions that hide the origin.

    2. Protein and fat content: appropriate for your dog's life stage and activity level.

    3. Carbohydrate and fiber sources: whole grains and vegetables add fiber for the digestive system.

    4. Added nutrients: omega-3/6 fatty acids, glucosamine, vitamins and minerals.

    5. Origin and manufacturing technology: where it's made, how it's processed, and the official importer and distributor.

    6. Kibble size, moisture, expiry date and package size: a bag you can finish quickly keeps kibble fresh and limits moisture and loss of aroma.

    Dry Kibble or Wet Food?

Dry kibble is convenient, easy to portion and keeps longer. Wet food (pâté) is aromatic and moist, which suits picky dogs or those who struggle to chew. Many owners use dry kibble as the main meal and wet food as a topper. Whichever dog food you choose, count the wet food toward your dog's total daily calories so they don't become overweight.

How Much Should You Feed Your Dog Each Day?

The right amount depends on your dog's weight, age, activity level and the food's calorie density (kcal per 100 g). The simplest approach is to start with the feeding guide on the package, then monitor your dog's weight and body condition for 2–3 weeks and adjust.

    1. Puppies should eat 3–4 small meals a day; adult dogs usually eat 2.
    2. An ideal body condition means you can feel the ribs under a thin layer of fat but can't see them clearly.
    3. Treats should make up only a small part of daily intake (under about 10%).

How to Switch Dog Food in 7–10 Days

Changing food suddenly is a common cause of vomiting or diarrhea in dogs. Transition to the new kibble gradually using this schedule:

    1. Days 1–3: 25% new food + 75% old food
    2. Days 4–6: 50% new food + 50% old food
    3. Days 7–9: 75% new food + 25% old food
    4. Day 10 onward: 100% new food

After 2–4 weeks, you can judge the new food by these signs:

    1. Your dog eats with appetite and finishes meals consistently.
    2. Stools are firm, low in odor and regular each day.
    3. Coat is shiny, with no itching or red rashes.
    4. Weight is stable, and your dog is happy and active.

On the other hand, if your dog shows itching, rashes, vomiting, ongoing diarrhea or refuses to eat, stop the new food and consult your veterinarian.
