Cat Food: The Definitive Guide to Choosing Dry Kibble

Cat Food: The Definitive Guide to Choosing Dry Kibble

Choosing cat food isn't just about picking what your cat likes or what's labeled "the best." Cats have very different nutritional needs from dogs, and those needs change from kittenhood to adulthood. So you need to look at your cat's body condition and health to pick a kibble that supports steady growth, a healthy weight and everyday wellness.

This article covers 5 key criteria for choosing cat food. Let's take a look!

    Common Types of Cat Food

The market offers many cat food products, divided into two main types: dry food (kibble) and wet food (pâté, soup treats, canned food). There are also snacks, treats, fresh food and ready-made meals.

    1. Dry food: convenient, easy to store and portion, usually nutritionally balanced, and a popular choice for everyday meals.
    2. Wet food: aromatic and high in moisture, often used for variety or to add water to a cat's diet.
    3. Snacks and treats: use only in small amounts; they shouldn't replace main meals.

For main meals, nutritionally balanced dry cat food is a popular choice for many households thanks to its convenience and easy portion control.

5 Criteria for Choosing Cat Kibble

    1. Your Cat's Age

A cat's nutritional needs change at each life stage, from kitten to adult to senior.

    •  Kittens: They grow fast, so they need high protein and fat to support the development of tissue cells, muscle and bone.

    •  Adult cats: Their musculoskeletal system is fully developed, so the main goal is to maintain a lean shape and steady body condition; choose a nutritionally balanced formula.

Many cat food products are now divided into three groups: kitten, adult and all life stages, making it easier for owners to choose the right kibble.

    2. Protein and Taurine Content

Cats are obligate carnivores, so their bodies need a high amount of animal protein. According to AAFCO nutritional standards, dry food for adult cats needs at least about 26% crude protein, and about 30% for kittens (on a dry matter basis).

In addition, some nutrients must be supplied in the diet, most notably taurine, an amino acid essential for cats. So when choosing cat food, favor products made specifically for cats that state their protein and fat content clearly and add nutrients such as taurine.

    3. Protein Source and Ingredients

A specifically named protein source (chicken, salmon, duck, tuna) is more transparent than a vague description. Also choose products that list the protein source first in the ingredient list rather than grains or fillers. Check whether the product adds vitamins, minerals and ingredients that support immunity.

    Ingredients to avoid:

    1. Chemical preservatives such as BHA and BHT may harm your cat's health with long-term use.
    2. Artificial colors and additives: they offer no nutritional value to cats and, on the contrary, may cause problems such as allergies or digestive upset.

    4. Kibble Size and Moisture

A moderate kibble size makes chewing easier for cats, and low moisture keeps kibble crunchy and lets it store longer. This information is usually in the product's specification table.

    5. Certifications, Origin and Package Size

Favor products with a clear origin, a factory tested for food safety (such as HACCP) and a formula that meets nutritional standards (such as AAFCO). For package size, consider a small bag to try first and a large bag once your cat is used to the food.

Today's dinner: Nutritionally Balanced Kibble for Cats

If you're not sure which kibble to choose for your cat, check out Today's dinner. It is a nutritionally balanced dry kibble line from Fusion Group's Today's brand.

Measured against the 5 criteria above:

    1. Age: three lines: Kitten (cats under 12 months), Adult Cat (cats over 12 months) and All Life Stages (cats of any age).
    2. Protein and taurine: minimum crude protein of 34% (Kitten), 33% (Adult Cat) and 32% (All Life Stages), all above the AAFCO levels cited earlier. Taurine is among the added nutrients in all three lines, along with L-lysine, DL-methionine and choline.
    3. Protein source and ingredients: Kitten and Adult Cat use salmon meal, chicken and duck; All Life Stages uses chicken and tuna. The formula also includes maqui berry, cranberry, spirulina, omega-3, dried brewer's yeast and propolis extract; according to the manufacturer, propolis helps prevent oral inflammation and infection and boosts resistance. Corn and soybean meal are energy sources alongside animal protein.
    4. Kibble size and moisture: brown dry kibble, 7–8 mm in size, with a maximum of 10% moisture.
    5. Certifications: HACCP-tested, meets AAFCO standards and carries the 9FREE commitment.
    6. Package size: 1 kg bags (Kitten, Adult Cat) and 1 kg bags and 5 kg sacks (All Life Stages).

How Do the Three Today's dinner Cat Lines Differ?

All three lines share the same nutritionally balanced base formula and differ mainly in suitable age and in protein, fat and mineral content. This table makes a quick comparison easy:

    Adult Cat Food

The Adult Cat line is for cats over 12 months old, with a balanced formula to maintain everyday health.

    All Life Stages Cat Food

The All Life Stages line can be used for cats at any stage, which is convenient for households with several cats of different ages. The formula contains 9 vitamins and 7 minerals.

How to Switch Foods, How Much to Feed and Where to Buy

Cats can be quite sensitive to food changes. Switch gradually over 7–10 days: for the first 2–3 days, mix about 25% new food with 75% old food, then increase to 50%, 75% and finally 100%. If your cat vomits or has diarrhea that doesn't clear up, stop the switch and ask your veterinarian.

Dry kibble is low in moisture, so always keep fresh water available; you can place several water bowls where your cat often walks. The right amount depends on each cat's weight, age and activity level; follow the feeding guide on the package.

Today's dinner is available at pet shops, Fusion Group's authorized dealers nationwide and e-commerce platforms.

    Conclusion

A suitable cat food needs to match your cat's age, have adequate protein and taurine, list its protein source and ingredients clearly, have a kibble size that fits your cat's mouth, and come with transparent certifications and origin. Measured against these criteria, the three Today's dinner lines (Kitten, Adult Cat and All Life Stages) are one example for you to consider: crude protein from 32% to 34%, protein from salmon, chicken, duck or tuna, made in South Korea and meeting HACCP, AAFCO and 9FREE standards. Choose a line by your cat's age, switch gradually, and contact Fusion Group if you need more advice or want to find a store near you.
